BAD NEWS FOR DOGS AS SCOTLAND FAIL TO ACT OVER SHOCK COLLARS November 2008 - The Kennel Club has expressed its disappointment and frustration following the announcement from the Scottish Government not to move forward with a ban on electric shock collars until Defra has completed further research on the impact of using the devices on dogs.
The research is costing the Government a total of £469,000 at a time when Defra resources for companion animals are scarce.

LEAGUE AGAINST CRUEL SPORTSLOCAL POLICE AUTHORITIES - GET INVOLVED November 2008 - At the heart of the League Against Cruel Sports campaigning work to ensure that the Hunting Act is enforced lies the question of police accountability.
Since February 2005 the League Against Cruel Sports has lead the way in demonstrating that the Hunting Act 2004 is good and enforceable legislation.
We have been encouraged by recent signs that the police are engaging with the problem of illegal hunting activity but there is always more that can be done.

MAN WHO STRANGLED CAT BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS November 2008 - A man found guilty of hitting his neighbour’s cat, strangling it and throwing it in the river has been banned from keeping animals for one year, following a case brought by the RSPCA.
42 year old Dougal Thorn previously of Anchor Close, Shoreham, West Sussex, was sentenced yesterday at Worthing Magistrates Court. He was also handed a two year community order with supervision, ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work and pay £367 in court costs and compensation.

RSPCA PUBLISHES REPORT 'THE WELFARE STATE' MEASURING 33 'INDICATORS' OF THE STATE OF ANIMAL WELFARE IN THE UK November 2008 - Each year the RSPCA publishes a report 'The Welfare State' measuring 33 'indicators' of the state of animal welfare in the UK. These indicators range across all animal welfare issues from farming to pets, wildlife to research animals, and are based on a wide range of statistics, research and surveys.
The idea is to gain as accurate a measurement as possible as to how we are treating animals, and how it can be improved. Below are summaries of the research animal-related indicators, which I thought might be of interest to you? Please feel free to report on any of these that are of interest.

THE BHS CALLS FOR AN END TO EQUINE DISCRIMINATION IN THE NEW FOREST November 2008 - The British Horse Society has released its response to proposals which impose controversial development control restrictions on equestrian activity in the New Forest.
The New Forest National Park’s Draft Recreation Management Strategy and the New Forest Park Plan Consultation Draft, aim to restrict equestrian activity in the New Forest by requiring planning permission for certain types of horse-keeping. This is due to alleged erosion of the landscape and natural habitat of local wildlife.

More than 50 unwanted dogs and cats are being taken in by the RSPCA every day over the Christmas period, with the charity warning that ‘out with the old, in with the new’ regularly applies to pets at this time of year.

ADI CHALLENGE TO BAN ON POLITICAL ADVERTISING GOES TO HOUSE OF LORDS DECEMBER 2007 December 2007 - ADI’s challenge to the Government’s ban on so-called ‘political’ broadcast advertising by animal, environmental and human rights organizations.
A TV advertisement produced for ADI’s ‘My Mate’s a Primate’ campaign in 2005 was banned by the BACC (The Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre. This was not because of the content of the advertisement, but because NAVS and ADI are deemed to be ‘political’ groups under the Communications Act 2003.

LAW LORDS RULE THAT HUNTING BAN IS LAWFUL: PRO-HUNT CHALLENGES DISMISSED November 2007 - The House of Lords has today dismissed appeals by the Countryside Alliance and other hunting supporters who argued the hunting ban breaches Human Rights and European law.
The Hunting Act 2004 must
