Read full story. |  | MAN WHO STRANGLED CAT BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS A man found guilty of hitting his neighbour’s cat, strangling it and throwing it in the river has been banned from keeping animals for one year, following a case brought by the RSPCA.
42 year old Dougal Thorn previously of Anchor Close, Shoreham, West Sussex, was sentenced yesterday at Worthing Magistrates Court. He was also handed a two year community order with supervision, ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work and pay £367 in court costs and compensation.

This year’s recipient of the Raymond Brooks-Ward Memorial Trophy will go for the first time to a Para-Equestrian Dressage rider, Sophie Christiansen.
The Trophy, which gets awarded to the most promising rider under 25 years old competing in any of the eventing, dressage (including Para-Equestrian) and show jumping disciplines, will be presented to Sophie during the evening performance of Olympia, The London International Horse Show on Saturday 20th December. Read full story. |  | BAD NEWS FOR DOGS AS SCOTLAND FAIL TO ACT OVER SHOCK COLLARS The Kennel Club has expressed its disappointment and frustration following the announcement from the Scottish Government not to move forward with a ban on electric shock collars until Defra has completed further research on the impact of using the devices on dogs.
The research is costing the Government a total of £469,000 at a time when Defra resources for companion animals are scarce.

Read full story. |  | SCRUFFTS FAMILY CROSSBREED DOG OF THE YEAR SHINES AT DISCOVER DOGS It was raining dogs all weekend at Earls Court, but a cute canine called Jaffa shone above the competition to become the Scruffts Family Crossbreed Dog of the Year.
The final of Scruffts, the nation’s favourite crossbreed competition, took place on Sunday 9th November at London’s leading dog event, Discover Dogs, and was judged by celebrity judge Summer Strallen, famous for her roles in Hollyoaks and the West End hit, The Sound of the Music. Jaffa, aged 11 months, managed to out-shine the competition with his owner Lindsey Truss from Hainault, Essex, to win the overall prize.
Read full story. |  | RSPCA PUBLISHES REPORT 'THE WELFARE STATE' MEASURING 33 'INDICATORS' OF THE STATE OF ANIMAL WELFARE IN THE UK Each year the RSPCA publishes a report 'The Welfare State' measuring 33 'indicators' of the state of animal welfare in the UK. These indicators range across all animal welfare issues from farming to pets, wildlife to research animals, and are based on a wide range of statistics, research and surveys.
The idea is to gain as accurate a measurement as possible as to how we are treating animals, and how it can be improved. Below are summaries of the research animal-related indicators, which I thought might be of interest to you? Please feel free to report on any of these that are of interest.

Research animal indicators Read full story. |  | INDI IS CROWNED BEST DOG IN THE COMPANION DOG CLUB COMPETITION AT DISCOVER DOGS Indi, aged 11 ½ from Walsall, West Midlands, has been named overall Best Dog in the grand final of the Companion Dog Club competition at London’s leading dog event, Discover Dogs.
Renowned canine behaviourist, trainer and author, Carolyn Menteith, who judged the competition congratulated owner Michelle Wood and Indi at Earls Court 2 on Sunday 9th November on their achievement.
Indi was crowned overall Best Dog after winning the Best OAP category of the competition where age and charisma both come first.
Michelle said, “It’s just amazing.”
