RSPCA PUBLISHES REPORT 'THE WELFARE STATE' MEASURING 33 'INDICATORS' OF THE STATE OF ANIMAL WELFARE IN THE UK November 2008 - Each year the RSPCA publishes a report 'The Welfare State' measuring 33 'indicators' of the state of animal welfare in the UK. These indicators range across all animal welfare issues from farming to pets, wildlife to research animals, and are based on a wide range of statistics, research and surveys.
The idea is to gain as accurate a measurement as possible as to how we are treating animals, and how it can be improved. Below are summaries of the research animal-related indicators, which I thought might be of interest to you? Please feel free to report on any of these that are of interest.

WAVE GOODBYE TO FIREWORK FEARS WITH SOUND THERAPY FOR DOGS November 2008 - One of Britain’s leading supermarkets is helping the RSPCA combat the misery suffered each year by the millions of animals left terrified by fireworks.
The Co-operative will help distribute a new leaflet produced by the RSPCA which gives practical advice on how owners can use sound therapy to overcome their dogs’ long-term fear of loud noises that have traditionally caused so much distress to animals during the Guy Fawkes celebrations.

‘BAT-PACKS’ PROVE RSPCA REHABILITATION A SUCCESS November 2008 - As Halloween passes, there’s good news for the species most synonymous with it the bat.
The RSPCA has discovered its method of rehabilitating orphaned pipistrelles is working, after tracking them post-release with specially designed ‘bat-packs’.
Disintegrating glue was used to attach a temporary 0.35g radio-tag and antenna to their backs as part of the groundbreaking research.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER YOUR PETS THIS NOVEMBER! September 2008 - Bonfire Night may go with a bang for you and your family, but it is estimated that approximately 60 per cent of pets become stressed and fearful during the firework season. To make matters worse, not only are many owners unaware how to help their pets with firework fears, veterinary professionals believe 71 per cent of owners are unable to spot the signs that their pets are unhappy.

MAN’S BEST FRIEND CAN HELP BOOST THE HEALTH AND FITNESS OF CHILDREN (London) June 2008 - Man’s best friend can help boost the health and fitness of children
Parents with dogs claim that since the arrival of their four-legged friend their children are less stressed and fitter. Research conducted by Mars Petcare reveals the beneficial impact pet dogs can have on children’s lives with nearly half of all dog owners commenting that their children do more walking since their dog arrived. 57% OF PETS FACE FIREWORK FEAR ON NEW YEAR’S EVE (UK) December 2007 - The RSPCA is urging people to attend public new year firework displays rather than holding their own as a revealing new poll shows 57 per cent of pets are scared of fireworks.
Organised displays are usually well publicised, which means pet owners can prepare in advance and reduce the amount of distress caused to animals.

DON'T LET AN ANIMAL SNEAK INTO YOUR WARDROBE RETAILERS URGED TO WAKE UP TO REAL FUR AND END CONSUMER CONFUSION (UK) December 2007 - A new anti fur campaign called 100% Fake is being launched after an RSPCA investigation found two High Street chains selling unlabelled or mislabelled fur.
